The Department of War (DOW) announced two investments totaling USD 24.5 million on September 19, 2025, to strengthen the U.S. supply chain for advanced optical displays. These projects were funded through the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Policy (OASW(IBP))'s Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) Program and were awarded to Kopin Corporation in Westborough, Massachusetts, and Tectus Corporation in Cupertino, California. The projects will target making cost-effective manufacturing processes for MicroLED displays, which are crucial for next-generation weapon systems.
Both projects will aid create a U.S.-based supply chain for high-tech MicroLED displays. MicroLED technology offers ultra-high brightness, making displays readable in direct sunlight, while also providing excellent image quality in low light for nighttime use. It also reduces size, weight, and power use, improving the effectiveness of soldiers.
These investments show the Department's commitment to supporting U.S. manufacturing as well as securing vital supply chains. They also align with the Secretary of War's goal of rebuilding the military by ensuring reliable, U.S.-based manufacturers of advanced displays for future weapon systems.
Executive Statement
According to Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Policy Michael Cadenazzi, microdisplays are crucial components in delivering information to the joint warfighter and are integrated into solutions across all domains including heads-up-displays for pilots, advanced night vision goggles, weapon optics, and unmanned systems. Securing a domestic supply of advanced MicroLED displays is vital for the Department's next-generation defense applications, ensuring both performance and security.
