General Motors (GM) and GM Korea have announced that they will fully launch the GMC and Buick brands in South Korea next year. The plan includes introducing four new models, including a mid-size SUV, under these brands. This move is seen as an effort to put to rest rumors that GM might withdraw from the Korean market.
GMC, which already sells the Sierra truck in Korea, will expand its lineup and launch early next year. Buick plans to introduce its first new model in Korea by mid-year. In total, more than four new models, including the mid-size SUV, will be released.
GM Korea also plans to invest 440 billion Korean won to improve local production and ensure it continues beyond 2028. The company is also considering bringing more electric vehicle models to Korea, such as the Cadillac Escalade IQ launched in November.
New Research Facility in Cheongna
Alongside this, GM Korea unveiled a new research and development (R&D) facility called the Virtual Engineering Lab. This facility combines 10 different research centers and includes tools like:
- The Electric System Bench to test vehicle electrical systems without needing a real car.
- The VR Walk-up Station where car design and usability can be experienced in virtual reality.
- The Energy and Emissions Lab to measure automotive emissions, fuel efficiency, and electric vehicle range.
Executive Statement
According to Hector Villarreal, CEO of GM Korea operations, GM’s firm commitment to Korea remains unchanged. GM Korea is responding to strong global demand for vehicles produced in Korea and is playing a key role as a core production base in GM’s global growth strategy. This reaffirmation of Korea’s importance is seen as a response to speculation about the withdrawal of GM’s Korean operations.
