OpenAI introduced its artificial intelligence-powered web browser, ChatGPT Atlas, expanding its presence beyond chat applications into the smart browser market.
The company unveiled that the new browser will turn ChatGPT into a main gateway for online search, making it to attract more traffic as well as generate revenue from digital advertising.
Atlas is now available for macOS, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android to follow, OpenAI noted.
It added that the browser includes a feature called Agent Mode, which enables it to browse and perform online tasks on behalf of users based on their search history and interests, while explaining each step of the process.
The launch came after CEO Sam Altman showcased activeness for the new product, describing it as “a once-in-a-decade opportunity to redefine what a browser is and how it’s used.”
Entering the browser market poses a significant challenge to Google Chrome, which boasts nearly three billion users globally. With Google already installing its Gemini AI technology into Chrome, this new step could further bolster the competitiveness.
The surge of AI-driven summaries may fuel concerns among publishers, as they worry about low traffic to conventional news as well as content sites due to users relying more on AI for information.
As ChatGPT Atlas holds prominence, it could also spark broader conversations about data privacy as well as the basics of AI-powered searching. If this strategy succeeds, OpenAI may set an innovative standard for browser functionality, potentially reshaping user experiences and challenging established norms within the tech and mobile advertising industries.
