Gumi City in North Gyeongsang Province will work to grow the food technology industry by using new technologies. The goal is to create a “virtuous food cycle” that connects all parts of the food process production, processing, distribution, and consumption. Gumi aims to build on its strong manufacturing background to enter the food industry and create a model where both cities and rural areas can grow together.
The main focus of this project is the Smart Manufacturing Food Tech Research Support Center. Gumi was chosen for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ “2026 Food Tech Research Support Center Establishment” project. The city will invest 28.2 billion won over three years (2026-2028) in the Imun-ri area of Sunsan-eup. This includes 12.5 billion won in national funding.
The center will have a smart manufacturing facility covering 3,574 square meters. It will help develop AI-based food production systems, test production processes, and support food safety. The goal is to help transform the food manufacturing industry using digital technologies.
By linking up with local food industry organizations, Gumi will create a full support system for everything from research to commercialization. The city will also combine its experience in smart manufacturing from the electronics industry to boost the growth of local food tech.
Starting in 2026, Gumi will also improve its school meal program. Schools will be able to buy food made from local agricultural products at a 50% discount, supporting about 57,000 students in 180 schools. The budget for this program will increase by 27%, and local food companies will have more opportunities to join.
Executive Statement
According to Gumi Mayor Kim Jangho, this project is significant in that it lays the administrative foundation for supporting the digital transformation of agri-food manufacturing processes. They hope the mid- to long-term food policies will be implemented without a hitch.
