Hyundai Mobis has announced that it's developing a new telematics system (MTCU) that uses 5G wireless communication to boost its presence in the automotive electronics market. The MTCU is a telematics system that helps integrate technology into vehicles for things like driving directions, accident detection, theft alerts, and remote control.
As the world moves from 4G to 5G, competition is growing in the mobility sector, especially for high-tech, multi-functional telematics products. Right now, most car telematics systems use 4G, and Hyundai Mobis is already mass-producing 4G-based telematics products.
The new 5G telematics technology being developed by Hyundai Mobis will allow for advanced features like high-precision maps, remote control for self-driving cars, and ultra-high-definition video streaming. 5G will also enable more services than 4G, such as over-the-air updates and better car-to-home connections.
This new 5G system also helps with the transition to Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), which rely on software more than hardware. One key feature of Hyundai Mobis’s new technology is that it integrates the antenna into the controller, which gives vehicles a cleaner, sleeker look without external antennas.
Hyundai Mobis is working with experts in mobile communication technology to bring this cutting-edge solution to market. They also showcased the product at CES 2026 in the U.S., hoping to attract more global customers and expand orders.
Executive Statement
According to Jung Soo-Kyung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Automotive Electronics Business Unit at Hyundai Mobis, to achieve rapid market entry in the next-generation connected car service sector, they will complete product development by the first half of this year and secure market leadership in the global market.
