On November 11, 2025, Hyundai Motor Group signed an agreement with Pyeongtaek City as well as other key partners to build a carbon-neutral hydrogen port. The goal is to create a model for reducing emissions at ports in Korea and help meet the country’s carbon neutrality targets.
According to the agreement, Hyundai Motor will lead the hydrogen business strategy, while Kia and Hyundai Glovis will install and run hydrogen fuel cell power generators at Pyeongtaek Port. This initiative aims to build a system for using hydrogen in port operations, including a 15-km pipeline for a stable hydrogen power supply. The partners will also work together on developing and testing fuel cell generator technology at Kia and Hyundai Glovis sites.
The Group and Pyeongtaek City will make an entire energy plan for the port, reinforcing reliable fuel cell power generation as well as a connected hydrogen supply system. Simultaneously, they will also launch hydrogen-powered transport vehicles and port equipment, by setting up hydrogen refueling stations across the board.
Hyundai Motor has tested Korea's first hydrogen truck between its Asan plant and Pyeongtaek Port, highlighting the Group's commitment to reducing carbon emissions in port logistics and creating a complete hydrogen mobility system. Through HTWO, its dedicated hydrogen brand, Hyundai Motor Group aims to support the growth of Pyeongtaek's hydrogen ecosystem by utilizing its extensive hydrogen business capabilities.
Executive Statement
According to Ken Ramirez, Head of Global Energy & Hydrogen Business Division at Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai is honored to jointly drive this important collaboration as a public-private partnership aimed at delivering real-world hydrogen applications to achieve the goals of both, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' 'Hydrogen Port' policy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 'Hydrogen City' policy. It represents the first domestic initiative to establish a broad hydrogen ecosystem for port decarbonization, leveraging Pyeongtaek Port's advanced infrastructure.
