Bone marrow is a soft vascular tissue present in the interior of long bones. It consists of two types of stem cells: hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells. Bone marrow is primarily responsible for hematopoiesis (formation of blood cells), production of lymphocytes, and storage of fats. Bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a special treatment for patients with some cancers including leukemia, lymphoma or other diseases. A bone marrow transplant involves removing cells that are normally found in the bone marrow (stem cells), filtering those cells, and transferring them back either to the donor (patient) or to another person.
Global bone marrow transplant market is estimated to be valued at US$ 10,356.1 million in 2022 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 4.0% during the forecast period (2022-2030).

Increasing prevalence of cancer, lymphoma, and other diseases requiring bone marrow transplant is expected to drive growth of the bone marrow transplant market
The increasing prevalence of various diseases such as cancer, lymphoma, and others, requiring bone marrow transplants is expected to drive the market growth over the forecast period. For instance, according to data provided by the American Cancer Society, Inc., a voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer, in January 2022, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is one of the most common cancers in the U.S., accounting for about 4% of all cancers. According to the same source, it is estimated by the American Cancer Society, Inc., that about 80,470 people (44,120 males and 36,350 females) will be diagnosed with NHL in 2022 in the U.S. This includes both adults and children.

Increasing research and development activities for bone marrow transplant is expected to drive the market growth during the forecast period.
Increasing research and development activities for bone marrow transplant is expected to drive the market growth over the forecast period. For instance, according to an article published by the Washington University, a public research university, in November 2021, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, U.S., developed a method of stem cell transplantation that does not require radiation or chemotherapy. Chemotherapy or radiation suppresses the immune system and puts patients at high risk of infections, organ damage, and other life-threatening side effects. The method developed by the researchers takes an immunotherapeutic approach, combining the targeted elimination of blood-forming stem cells in the bone marrow with immune-modulating drugs to prevent the immune system from rejecting the new donor stem cells. This method could eliminate dangerously low blood cell counts, bleeding complications, organ damage, and infections.
Global Bone Marrow Transplant Market– Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic
Since the COVID-19 virus outbreak in December 2019, the disease has spread to over 100 countries across the globe and the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency on January 30, 2020.
COVID-19 can affect the economy in three main ways: by directly affecting production and demand, by creating disruptions in distribution channels, and through its financial impact on firms and financial markets. Due to nationwide lockdowns, several countries, such as China, India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, and others, are facing problems with regards to the transportation of products from one place to another.
The COVID-19 pandemic had a negative effect on the bone marrow transplant market, owing to the complications associated with it. For instance, a bone marrow transplant may cause pulmonary complications that are associated with death. Aside from the virulence of the illness, stringent government policies may cause numerous difficulties for the transplant course such as: 1) Blood transfusion is essential for transplant patients however the number of blood donors decreases with population confinement or lockdown; 2) Drug manufacturing and available medicines are compromised due to disruption in supply chain; 3) Allogenic stem cell transplant with donors on international files becomes extremely difficult to access due to international border closures; 4) In order to manage unstable patients, an intensive care unit with mechanical ventilation is required; however, due to the pandemic, this was not possible.
Global Bone Marrow Transplant Market: Restraint
The major factors that hinder growth of the global bone marrow transplant market include scarcity of bone marrow donors and high cost of bone marrow transplant. For instance, in the U.S., autologous bone marrow transplant costs around US$360,000 & allogeneic bone marrow costs around US$ 800,000.
