A urinary catheter is a hollow, partially flexible tube that collects urine from the bladder and leads to a drainage bag. Urinary catheters come in many sizes and types. Catheters are made from rubber and non-rubber materials such as silicone. It is important to use the correct type of catheter and a non-rubber catheter is used if one is allergic  to latex. A urinary catheter is used when an individual is having problems urinating naturally. It allows the individual or patient to urinate and drain while having an obstruction in the tube that carries urine out of the bladder (urethra). The catheter may be removed after a few minutes, hours, or days. It may also be needed for long-term. Intermittent catheters, indwelling (foley) catheters, and external catheters are the three main types of catheters. Intermittent catheters are temporarily inserted into the bladder and removed when the bladder is empty. Indwelling (Foley) catheters remain in place for many days or weeks.

The global urinary catheters market is estimated to be valued at US$ 5,293.6 million in 2022 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 5.6% during the forecast period (2022-2030).

Global Urinary Catheters Market – Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic

Since the COVID-19 virus outbreak in December 2019, the disease has spread to over 100 countries across the globe, and the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency on January 30, 2020.

COVID-19 can affect the economy in three main ways: by directly affecting the production and demand of drugs, by creating disruptions in distribution channels, and through its financial impact on firms and financial markets. Due to nationwide lockdowns, several countries such as China, India, Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E., Egypt, and others are facing problems with the transportation of drugs from one place to another.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the global urinary catheters market. For instance, in May 2022, according to the data published in Antimicrobial Stewardship & Healthcare Epidemiology, catheter-related infections had increased during COVID-19 in an 11-hospital system in New York City. A disproportionate number of central-line infections occurred in larger hospitals. Patients with COVID-19 had shorter times for catheter insertion to infection and a higher incidence of infections was noted in the larger centers.

Global Urinary Catheters Market: Key Developments

Increasing adoption of inorganic growth strategies, such as product launches by key market players is expected to drive the global urinary catheters market growth. For instance, in March 2022, Sonoma Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a pharmaceutical company, announced that it had launched Microdox, a urinary tract infection catheter and bladder rinse in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Microdox is a super-oxidized solution technology intended to treat and prevent infections in the urinary tract and bladder.

Global Urinary Catheters Market: Restraint

Increasing number of product recalls by regulatory authorities such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to hinder the market growth. For instance, in April 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalled a class II device silicone foley catheter with a temperature sensor, which was manufactured by Covidien, a subsidiary of Medtronic. The device was recalled because the catheter failed to meet the established calibrated temperature sensing tolerance and correctly measure patient body temperatures that lead to an incorrect diagnosis and insufficient treatment.
