Intensity modulated proton therapy is a proton therapy (an external beam therapy) that uses ionization radiation. In intensity modulated proton therapy, a beam of protons target tumors with the help of proton accelerators. These charged particles damage the DNA cells and stop them from dividing, thus slowing the tumor growth. Intensity modulated proton therapy treatment is carefully planned by using  computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MRI) images of patients associated with computerized dose calculation to define the dose tolerability suitable to the tumor shape. The equipment used in intensity modulated proton therapy is mainly medical linear accelerators. The treatment time is around 15 minutes to 1 hour.

Global Intensity-Modulated Proton Therapy Market- Drivers

The rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as cancer is a major burden globally. According to the World Health Organization, cancer accounted for around 9.6 million deaths across the globe in 2018. Moreover, healthcare facilities are focusing on adoption of intensity modulated proton therapy due to its safety and efficiency in treatment of cancer. In February 2020, IBA Ion Bean Application announced that they have signed a contract to install Proteus ONE, a compact proton therapy at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto Presidential Hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Global Intensity-Modulated Proton Therapy Market- Impact of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted growth of various markets, and it is also expected to hamper the growth of the global intensity modulated proton therapy market during 2020. The pandemic has directly affected demand for the intensity modulated proton therapy as cancer patients are at higher risk of getting infected by COVID-19. Moreover, implementation of nationwide lockdown in several countries and safety precautions suggested by World Health Organization to decrease the risk of spread of COVID-19 while performing treatments and therapy procedures has made it difficult to administer therapy in cancer patients. As a result, the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to hamper growth of the global intensity modulated proton therapy market.

Global Intensity-Modulated Proton Therapy Market- Restraints

Intensity modulated proton therapy devices are large in size and also occupy larger space. The investment is high due to additional setup cost of the equipment which increases the investment cost and thereby limits the market growth. Moreover, high cost proton therapy is expected to affect the growth of the market. For instance, according to The Institute of Clinical and Economic Review, the cost of intensity modulated proton therapy for cancer patients in the U.S is US$ 73,000. These factors are expected to restrain the growth of the global intensity modulated proton therapy market.

Global Intensity-Modulated Proton Therapy Market- Regional Analysis

On the basis of region, the global intensity modulated proton therapy market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa. The burden of cancer is growing across North America, and various organizations such as Pan America Health Organization (PAHO) are operating in North America to reduce cancer mortality. Major players in the market are focused on research and development which is expected to drive global intensity modulated proton therapy market growth during forecast period. For instance, in 2018, Varian Medical System, a radiation oncology treatments and software maker, introduced a single room intensity modulated proton therapy system called 'ProBeam 360' at the 2018 American Society of Radiation Oncology meeting.

Moreover, in Europe, cancer is the highest cause of death and morbidity. For instance, According to the European Journal of Cancer, in 2018, Cancer accounted for 1.9 million deaths in Europe. Therefore, the increasing disease prevalence in the region is expected to create growth opportunities for players to introduce oncology treatments and expand their presence. Market players are focusing on strategies such as acquisitions and mergers in order to strengthen their market share in global intensity modulated proton therapy market. For instance, in January 2020, Ion Beam Application S.A, a leading provider of proton therapy solutions, announced that the company has signed a contract with International Charity Foundation Cartu, the largest charity organization in Georgia. The contract includes clinical use of Proteus ONE solution for scientific research in campus of Kutaisi International University, in Georgia.

Furthermore, the increasing number of healthcare facilities offering intensity modulated proton therapy in Asia Pacific is expected to favor growth of the global intensity modulated proton therapy market in the region. For instance, in 2019, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited, an Indian hospital chain, started the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC) in India equipped with intensity modulated proton therapy and image guided radiotherapy.
