Overview

Specimen retrieval bags are used in the laparoscopic (abdomen and pelvic) surgical procedures. These bags temporarily contain biological materials such as adnexal cysts and masses and facilitate its removal from patient’s body. These bags are designed to reduce contamination of the abdominal cavity during surgeries. These tear-resistant high-quality bags are manufactured from nylon and coated by polyurethane. The specimen retrieval bag has an open end, closed end, and longitudinal axis for the collection of biological materials. It is a single use surgical instrument.

Specimen Retrieval Market Drivers

Increasing prevalence of gynecological disorders is expected to drive the specimen retrieval market growth. For instance, in September 2016, according to National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), gynecological diseases are the most common cause of cancers in women. According NCBI, in India, around 122,844 cases 67,477 deaths of women are registered, annually due to cervical cancer.

Furthermore, key players in the market are focused on developing new technologies to enhance their market share. This in turn is expected to propel the specimen retrieval market growth. For instance, Nubert Tissue Retrieval Bag (Mediflex Surgical Products), is the first disposable laparoscopic retrieval bag system. It is tear resistant, tough, and fluid impervious material.  The Nubert retrieval bag has a blue tag, which indicates the angled opening and tapered design that minimizes tissue bunching and encourages automatic bag closure.

Specimen Retrieval Market Restraints

Product recall is the major factor, which is expected to hamper the specimen retrieval market growth. For instance, in November 2018, Espiner Medical Ltd. received product recall letter from the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Espiner Tissue retrieval bags. These bags were recalled as the label was incorrect. Label states that volume of the bag is 1200ml, whereas the actual volume of bag was 1000ml. Furthermore, in May 2019, The U.S FDA recalled the product of ConMed Corporation, Anchor Tissue Retrieval System. The product was recalled due to presence of voids in the seal or partial seal results.

Specimen Retrieval Market Regional Analysis

On the basis of region, the global specimen retrieval market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa.

North America is expected to hold dominant position in the global specimen retrieval market, owing to increasing product launch by key players. For instance, in April 2018, Purple Surgical launched its laparoscopic and surgical single-use instruments portfolio at General Surgery Congress, an international meeting for surgeons across Peru and other Latin American countries. Therefore, expansion of single-use surgical instruments portfolio is expected to impel the specimen retrieval market growth in North America.

Moreover, Europe is also expected to witness significant growth in the specimen retrieval market, owing to increasing number of cholecystectomy surgeries in this region. For instance, according to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), in 2014, around 66,660 cholecystectomies are performed in the U.K, annually, which costs US$ 137.286 million. Among all these surgeries, 61,220 are laparoscopic cholecystectomies. Therefore, increasing number of surgeries is expected to lead to high demand for specimen retrieval products and accessories.

Key players operating in the global specimen retrieval market include, Johnson & Johnson Services, Inc., Teleflex Incorporated, Applied Medical Resources Corporation, B.Braun Melsungen AG, Laprosurge, Purple Surgical, CONMED Corporation, Cooper Surgical, Inc., Genicon, and Medtronic.
