Sodium hydrosulfite, which is also called sodium dithionite, is a solid, crystalline, white powder with a hint of sulfurous odor. It is a sodium salt of dithinous acid, which is mostly stable in air, however, it decomposes in water or acid solutions. When it is given exposure to moisture and air it heats up spontaneously. It is easy to transport and can be stored for an extended period of time provided necessary safety precautions are taken against moisture and air. Sodium hydrosulfite applications in many industries, though particularly in paper and pulp industry for bleaching, depolarization, and brightening of virgin and recycled fiber. Moreover, it finds application in the water treatment industry, textile industry, leather processing, and food bleaching for gelatin, honey, and sugar. It is also used in the dyeing industry.

Market Outlook

Global sodium hydrosulfite market size was valued at US$ 240 million in 2017, and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 4.1% during the forecast period (2019-2027). Increasing use of sodium hydrosulfite in various industries for bleaching application is expected to propel the market growth in the near future. Wood pulp and textile industry account for the largest consumers of sodium hydrosulfite as it is used for bleaching process in the respective industries. Sodium hydrosulfite is also used for bleaching process in food additives, pharmaceuticals, mineral pre flotation, and kaolin bleaching. This is expected to increase the demand for sodium hydrosulfite and subsequently boost the market growth. Moreover, increasing demand for bleaching agents in various industries is expected to boost the demand for sodium hydrosulfite and support the market growth.

However, a gradual decline in pulp and paper production around the world is expected to hamper the demand for sodium hydrosulfite and subsequently restrain the global sodium hydrosulfite market growth. Rise in environmental awareness is expected to hinder the demand for paper and paper products, which will negatively impact the market growth. Furthermore, increasing labor cost is also expected to hamper the market growth, particularly in emerging economies.

Market Taxonomy:

On the basis of product type, the global sodium hydrosulfite market has been segmented into:

  • Food Grade
  • Technical grade

On the basis of process, the global sodium hydrosulfite market has been segmented into:

  • Zinc Process
  • Sodium Formate Process
  • Others

On the basis of application, the global sodium hydrosulfite market has been segmented into:

  • Textiles
  • Wood pulp bleaching
  • Mineral flotation
  • Others

Market Regional Analysis

Asia Pacific is expected to witness highest demand for sodium hydrosulfite, which will subsequently increase its market share in the global sodium hydrosulfite market. This is owing to growing textile and wood pulp industries in emerging economies such as India and China. Moreover, lack of stringent regulations in emerging economies uses sodium hydrosulfite is simple as compared to other regions, which will support the market growth. Furthermore, the market in Europe and North America is mature and hence, it is not expected to witness any significant growth in the near future.

Market Players

Major players operating in global sodium hydrosulfite market include Cameo chemicals, Shangy Jiehua Chemical Co. Ltd, BASF SE, Montgomery Chemicals, Chemtrade Logistics Inc., Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc., Guangdong ZhongCheng Chemicals Inc. Ltd, Bruggemann Chemical, Jinhe Group, AZ Chemicals Inc., TCP Limited, and more.

Key Developments:

  • In March 2019, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. has been recognized by Intel as a recipient of its prestigious 2018 Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement (SCQI) award.
  • In January 2016, the people in the surrounding areas of the TCP production facility demanded the seizure of the operations. The plant was producing sodium hydrosulphite (SHS) and leakage of sulphur dioxide from the plant caused problems to the local people. This action lead to losses in business operations for TCP limited.
  • In December 2009, Guangdong Zhongcheng Chemical Industrial Co (GZCI) plans to double sodium hydrosulfite capacity to 160 000 tonne/year. After this expansion, the company would be in a strong position of fulfilling 90% of the domestic demand of china.
