Increasing demand for medical food and ingredients such as prebiotics due to individuals suffering from gastrointestinal (GI) diseases is expected to drive the global prebiotics for dietary supplements market growth during the forecast period.

According to an article published by BioMed Central Ltd, a scientific open access publisher, in March 2021, a retrospective cohort study of routine electronic health records in the U.K. primary care covering 14 million patients was conducted to calculate the incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from 2006 to 2016. Prebiotics help in reducing the risk and severity of GI infection and inflammation including diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, and ulcerative colitis, as well as bowel function disorders including irritable bowel syndrome. Furthermore, prebiotics increase the bioavailability and uptake of minerals.
