Cyber knife is a non-invasive, painless robotic radiosurgery system used in the treatment of brain tumors such as malignant, and non-malignant tumors. It is also considered to be a radiosurgery device that do not require frame for targeting. It is also known as the synchrony system or synchrony method that uses a combination of surgical placed internal fiducials and light emitting optical fibers that is mounted on the patient body where the optical fibers are tracked by infrared tracking camera. Cyber knife radiosurgery benefit to patients who have previously received large doses of radiation therapy. The cyber knife radiosurgery treatment can be completed in 1 to 5 days treatment sessions with each treatment session lasts between 30 to 90 minutes. It can be used alone to treat the brain metastases.

The cyber knife system comprises of diagnostic x-ray tube, 6 MV linear accelerator, secondary collimator, robot gantry, silicon X-ray detectors, and patient couch. Cyber knife systems has a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for the treatment of tumors such as head, neck cancers, spinal lesions, pancreas, and malignant tumors. Potential benefits of the cyber knife system includes no incision, no loss in blood, no pain, no overnight hospitalization, also it is faster and more accurate and patient can breathe normally during treatment. This treatment is based on the principle of destruction of cancerous cells by distracting their DNA by radiation, helps to slower the growth of cancerous cells.
