Fipronil is a phenylpyrazole insecticide, which is used to control fleas, ticks, ants, beetles, termites, rootworms, and other insects. The insecticide in the form of a white powder was registered in 1996 in the U.S for indoor pest control and commercial turf.
Drivers and Restraints
Increasing demand for food grains to cater the needs of growing population is expected to propel demand for insecticides such as fipronil. According to United States Department of Agriculture, in 2012, about 355 million metric tons of food grain was produced by the U.S, which increased to 443 million metric tons in 2014. Also, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in the U.S., the expenditure while manufacturing insecticide was US$ 2,038 million in 2010 and increased to US$ 2,184 in 2012.
However, availability of various alternatives such as silica gel, boric acid, and diatomaceous earth, which are less toxic in nature is restraining growth of the fipronil market. Furthermore, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified fipronil as carcinogenic as its exposure causes malignant and benign thyroid tumors in laboratory animals. Such adverse effects related to health is another factor that is hindering growth of the market.
The market in Asia Pacific is expected to witness significant growth in terms of value and is expected to retain dominant position over the forecast period, owing to increasing vector-borne diseases, as fipronil is widely used in insecticides. According to the Government of India, in 2012, South East Asia Region (SEAR) countries reported around 0.29 million dengue cases, of which India contributed 20%, Indonesia 29%, and Thailand 30%.
Key players are focused on adopting various inorganic growth strategies such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, partnerships, marketing, and new product launches to strengthen their foothold in the global fipronil market. For instance, in March 2018, Ceva launched Duoflect— a parasiticide—containing a formulation of fipronil and s-methoprene, is used to prevent or treat tick and flea infestations in cats and dogs.
Key players operating in the global fipronil market include, BASF SE., Rotam Agrochemical Company Limited, Parijat Industries Pvt. Ltd., GSP Crop Science Private Ltd., Shandong Qiaochang Chemical Co., Ltd., and Jiangsu Tuoqiu Agrochemicals Co., Ltd.
