A cancer registry is an information system that collects, stores, and manages data on cancer patients. Registries are important in cancer surveillance because they help to recognize the efforts of doctors and scientists as well as where the current treatments stand in terms of reducing the cancer burden. Surveillance data can also be used to plan and evaluate cancer prevention and control interventions, as well as to serve as a foundation for cancer research.

The collection of cancer data begins with identifying cancer patients who have been diagnosed or treated in hospitals, outpatient clinics, radiology departments, doctors' offices, diagnostic laboratories, surgical centers, or other providers (such as pharmacists), who diagnose or treat cancer patients.

Cancer registries collect information that can be classified into several categories such as patient demographics, tumor or cancer characteristics, and stages of disease, treatment and outcomes. To support the handling of information in cancer registries, relevant regulations, policies, and laws are strictly enforced by North American Association for Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR). For example, information identifying a patient is removed when the data is reported. This safeguards cancer patients’ as well as healthcare professional’s’ privacy and confidentiality.

Global Cancer Registry Software Market – Dynamics

The increasing development of cancer registry software in free is expected to boost global cancer registry software market growth. For instance, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC), by September 2020, over 98% of National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR)-funded cancer registries used at least one Registry Plus product, with more than half of those used two or more products. Registry Plus is a free software suite for collecting and processing cancer registry data that is available to the public released in March 2020 by CDC. Many cancer registries are now using Registry Plus products as a common platform, allowing them to meet NPCR standards for electronic data exchange, while streamlining and automating registry operations. These factors are expected to support global cancer registry software market growth over the forecast period.
